How and Why the BIM Tools and Processes are Maximized When Implemented as a Component of the Lean Operating System

Presenter:

South Cole - BIM Manager, Linbeck

Presentation overarching theme:

Demonstrate how and why BIM tools and processes are maximized when implemented as component of the Lean Operating System.

Presentation Abstract:

Variation and waste continue to plague the design and implementation of construction projects.  In recent years, two countermeasures have gained momentum in the effort to eliminate waste and manage variation:  Lean Operating System (LOS) and Building Information Modeling (BIM).  However, these two are rarely mentioned in the same sentence.

The LOS is founded on a philosophy and set of principles that have relevance to every aspect and phase of a project; application typically occurs in limited scope, but has the most significant impact when applied as thoroughly as possible. Similarly, BIM implementation is typically executed through disintegrated, disconnected efforts; successful BIM implementation that realizes a measureable and sustainable return on investment relies on the use of a Lean Operating System.

This presentation will show examples of BIM implementation through the Lean Operating System. The audience will be exposed to BIM tools and process in action and, more importantly, an ongoing social exercise that adds value to the entire project.

LCI Houston Community of Practice

The Lean Construction Institute (LCI), a non-profit research organization, was founded in August 1997. LCI's purpose is to develop and disseminate new knowledge regarding the management of work in design, engineering and construction for capital facilities. LCI has developed the Lean Project Delivery System© (LPDS), and the Last Planner® System of production control. Lean Construction is a production management-based approach to project delivery - a new way to design and build capital facilities. Lean production management has caused a revolution in manufacturing design, supply and assembly. Applied to construction, Lean changes the way work is done throughout the delivery process. Lean Construction extends from the objectives of a lean production system - maximize value and minimize waste - to specific techniques and applies them in a new project delivery process extending from project definition through design, supply and assembly.

The Houston Community of Practice (CoP) of LCI has been developed to provide local lean support to owners, architects and designers, engineers, contractors, specialty contractors and suppliers who are doing business in the Houston area.  We invite owners and project delivery team members to meet together as a local user group to learn, share and develop a lean community in the Houston area.

We are dedicated to exploring the three opportunities provided by Lean Project Delivery (LPD):

-Impeccable coordination to create predictable work flow

-Projects as a production system to change the structure of work in design and construction.

-Project as a collective enterprise to align financial incentives.
